How AI assistants choose which sources to cite

Citations aren't random. Assistants reach for the same qualities every time — here's what they are.

When a grounded assistant answers a question, it pulls from a handful of web sources and, increasingly, links them. Getting cited is its own win: it drives referral traffic and it reinforces the pattern that makes the model name you again. So what makes a page citable?

The qualities citable sources share

  • Direct answers — the page states the answer plainly and early, so it can be quoted without editing.
  • Specificity — concrete facts, numbers, and named entities beat vague marketing prose.
  • Independence — third-party sources (reviews, directories, editorial roundups) are cited more readily than a brand's own homepage for 'best of' questions.
  • Freshness — recently updated pages with current dates win when the model is grounded in live search.
  • Structure — clear headings, lists, and FAQ blocks that map cleanly to sub-questions.

Why third-party sources punch above their weight

For a recommendation question, an assistant is looking for corroboration it can trust. Your own site claiming you're the best is expected; a review platform, an industry directory, or an independent 'best tools for X' article saying so is far more persuasive to the model. That's why appearing in the sources others cite often matters more than optimizing your own pages.

In our own research across categories, a small set of independent domains — review sites, directories, and reference sites — gets cited disproportionately often. Getting listed and reviewed on the ones relevant to your niche is one of the highest-leverage GEO moves available.

How to become a cited source

Publish the answer-first page for each buyer question, earn presence on the third-party platforms your category's answers already lean on, keep your facts current, and make everything easy to parse. Then measure which sources the assistants actually cite for your queries — that tells you exactly where to invest next.
